Mythical Creature: Super Mom

There are many mythical creatures in lore and legend. Fairies, dragons, and unicorns are among the well known. But I propose we add another to the list. One that has been thrown around haphazardly for some time now. I think doing more harm than good.

Super Mom.

super mom

I believe that Super Mom does not exist. I’ve said it before, it is far too easy as an outsider looking in to label someone as such. Brushing the picture with a few strokes of reality, said “Super Mom” has her struggles, moments of impatience, and may even go unshowered for days in a row… I bet she has days where she just wants to stay in bed, lock the door to the bathroom so she can pee in peace {HA!}, perhaps even mumbles obscenities under her breath, has dropped many a glass on the floor, cries, calls on a friend because she is having a hard time and needs someone to talk to, forgets to turn on the slow cooker, or finds herself running late even though she woke extra early to prepare for her day. People have called me a Super Mom before. I just shake my head and laugh. Heartily.

I’m sure you’re familiar with the “grass is always greener” idiom? Perhaps it is only greener because it is fertilized with manure.

The Internet provides a cape.

Pinterest especially highlights individuals that are so crafty, creative, witty, artsy, and talented… I could spit. I recently challenged myself to do more DIY projects. My DIY list is a mile long and between my daily routine and *life* some days it seems like I will never finish it. So when I finally finish a project or recipe post?? I am so … What’s the word? Relieved.

I am no Super Mom.

I struggle with my balancing act just as much as the next momma. As far as I am concerned, Super Mom is just a villainous label that runs the risk of making mothers feel inept and possibly even pit moms against each other. Just what we need, right?

Personally, I’d much rather believe in unicorns.

They’re cute and sparkly.

I love this post. I certainly see you as a super-mom – I guess everything looks different when you’re on the outside. One of the first people to call me a super-mom was actually my mother-in-law. I honestly thought she was making fun of me, wondering how I “did it all”. LOL – I thought it was her way of saying I was lazy sahm… but she really thought & thinks that I just do it all. I don’t really see it, but it is nice to have people think you’re good at the whole mom thing. I guess that’s what I take from it all. 🙂

That is a nicer way to look at it. I think I’m more cynical. LOL After being called that and having the days where I feel like an utter failure… I probably started thinking such a compliment was backhanded. Being put up so high on a pedestal only worsens the pain when I fall.
