Homemade Organic Coconut Butter

If you follow me on Instagram {holler!}, you know that I’ve been butter crazy lately. The Mister loves nut butters and I use coconut butter fairly often. To ease the financial blow for these organic butters, I started making them myself. To make coconut butter, you just need coconut flakes!

Buying paleo and primal friendly butters takes a toll on your wallet. Homemade Organic Coconut Butter lets you control the quality while saving money.
  • Organic Coconut Chips {flakes or shred - unsweetened} I blend four cups at a time.
  1. Slowly break down the coconut chips in a blender. Do not add water! Trust...
  2. Continue blending, scraping down the sides often. Let the blender's motor rest often so it does not overheat.
  3. Once the coconut's oils are released, the coconut chips blend together with ease. Continue scraping down the sides as needed and blend until it is as smooth as you like it.
  4. Scrape the coconut butter into a Mason jar, cover, label, and keep in the pantry. There's no need to refrigerate coconut butter.


  • When I’d make this coconut butter {I am coconut-free now} I would buy Tropical Traditions organic coconut flakes. To save money, I’d buy the 2.2-lb bag.

  • Coconut goes through stages during the butter making process. Starting in chip form it will shift from chopped to a fine coconut flour, to a wet sand, and finally to a butter. The longer you let it run, the smoother the consistency and less “grit”. It is important to continually scrape down the sides and at no point add water to “help” it blend. That will reduce its shelf life.

      Love this post Erin! I keep buying TT’s coconut cream concentrate (butter) but I really should just buy the flakes and do it myself. I’d love to see a post on ways to use it though as I never can think of ways to incorporate it into our meals.
